SHIPPING

Shipping in the U.S. generally runs $275. Costs include a health certificate, rabies vaccination, carrier, and airfare. Airfare varies somewhat depending on the airline chosen and and the shipping location. All puppies are current on vaccinations. The health certificate and rabies shot run about $72, the carrier is $25, and shipping costs run around $110-$175. If you want to check on airline costs, call Continental 800-575-3335, Alaska Air 800-225-2752, or Delta 888-736-3738 and ask how much to ship a puppy in the smallest size carrier (100 series) from PDX (Portland) to your destination. The puppy and carrier will be under 10 lbs.

Delta and Continental have pet-safe shipping. Pets are kept in air-conditioned or heated facilities as soon as the flight ends so you don't have to worry so much about the weather. If the weather is too severe, they won't ship pets on that day. I socialize the puppies so that they are used to pet carriers and traveling and so that shipping is not overly stressful. Puppies can generally go home between 10 & 14 weeks (or with local pick-up, around 10 weeks).  Puppies are like kids, each puppy develops at it's own rate. I make decisions on when puppies can go to their new homes individually. They need to have a large enough body size to withstand weather changes, and be independent, confident, well-socialized so they can adapt comfortably to their new homes.

A Boy or a Girl?

Marking:

I often have people tell me they want a girl because they don't want a boy that lifts his leg and goes to the bathroom in the house. The belief that all boys mark their territories is an unfortunate mistake. The boys that mark are almost always unneutered males.

Most boys that are neutered by about 5 months do not develop the territorial habits of marking or displaying aggression. Neutered males can be affectionate, loyal, very sweet companions with great potty habits. Even males that are neutered later in life can learn good potty habits with a little work. Personally, I think boys make wonderful companions.

Temperament:

While girls can make adorable companions, they can be dominating and a little more independent, especially if they are not spayed. It is just as important to spay your girl so that she stays sweet and affectionate.

Temperament is often not related to gender but specific to the puppy. Some puppies are more outgoing and unstoppable, some are a little shyer and gentle.

Puppies can be altered much earlier these days so I recommend that you talk to your vet about when to spay or neuter your puppy. You may choose to alter your puppy very early or a little later, but it is best to have them neutered before they start to mature, their hormones kick in, and hormone-related behaviors begin. Even girls are known to mark their territories and display dominance behaviors, so spaying your girl is good step towards keeping your lovable companion sweet.

Neutering and Spaying

I believe that one of the best things you can do for the benefit and health of your puppy and for society is to spay or neuter your puppy. Dogs that are altered (spayed or neutered) early do not often develop habits of spraying or urinating to mark their territories and they are less likely to be aggressive. While many of us keep our dogs for their entire lives, sometimes our lives take unexpected turns and our dogs must find new homes. It is so important that our dogs make a great pet for any home, including that they do not mark inside the house and that they are not aggressive. We want to make sure that if the dog unexpectedly needs a new home, there will not be any issues that would make the dog hard to place. For this reason, I ask that puppies from Cudlpupy be altered before the age of 6 months. This will give them the best chance for a great life.

Here are some affordable spay and neuter options:

Willamette Humane Society in Salem offers a spay/neuter coupon. Dogs can be spayed of $60 (no extra weight fee) and dogs neutered for $49. See  www.oregonspayneuter.org to print the coupon.

Banks Veterinary in Banks offers a spay for a small chihuahua for about $105.

Multnomah County Animal shelter has info on $10.00 spay/neuters for kitties/cats

Pet Overpopulation:

For those of you who might be interested in learning about the topic of pet overpopulation, I highly recommend Nathan Winograd's book: Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No Kill Revolution in America.

As I am an educator myself, I appreciated his well-researched and well-written book addressing the history of our country's treatment of animals and his explanations as to why we have the current circumstances regarding our animals' welfare.

As a nation, we share our homes with ninety million cats and seventy-five million dogs. We spend thirty-eight billion dollars on our pets. (More to come, under construction...)
